AI coding startup Cognition raises $1B at $25B pre-money valuation

Cognition, the innovative company behind the autonomous AI software engineer Devin, has successfully raised over $1 billion, achieving a pre-money valuation of $25 billion. This significant financial milestone was revealed by the company on Wednesday, marking a dramatic increase from its previous valuation of $10.2 billion just eight months earlier following a $400 million funding round. The latest funding round was spearheaded by prominent venture capital firms, Lux Capital and General Catalyst, with substantial contributions from existing investors such as Founders Fund and 8VC. Additionally, new investors including Ribbit Capital, Atreides, and Layer Global joined in, signaling robust confidence from top-tier financiers in the potential for independent AI coding startups in the current market. Despite concerns last year about larger model creators dominating the coding landscape, Cognition has emerged as a formidable player. Competitors like Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex have made significant inroads, but Cognition’s strategic acquisition of Windsurf’s remaining assets last year has positioned it favorably. Cognition counts major enterprises among its clientele, including Mercedes-Benz, NASA, Goldman Sachs, and Santander. The company reported an impressive annualized revenue run-rate of $492 million, with Devin's enterprise usage experiencing a remarkable 50% month-over-month growth over the past six months.
