Harjot Gill, the former co-founder of FluxNinja, identified a significant trend within his team of remote engineers: the increasing use of AI-driven code generation through platforms like GitHub Copilot. He recognized that this trend would likely create new challenges in the code review process. In response to these challenges, Gill launched CodeRabbit in early 2023, an innovative AI platform designed for code review that subsequently acquired FluxNinja. As developers increasingly rely on AI coding assistants, they often encounter buggy outputs that require extensive correction. CodeRabbit aims to alleviate some of these issues by identifying errors and providing actionable feedback, positioning itself as a supportive partner in the coding process. The startup has experienced impressive growth, reporting a monthly increase of 20% and surpassing $15 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR). On Tuesday, CodeRabbit announced a successful $60 million Series B funding round, elevating its valuation to $550 million. This latest funding brings the company’s total capital raised to $88 million, with Scale Venture Partners leading the round, alongside NVentures, Nvidia’s investment arm, and previous supporters like CRV. CodeRabbit has already made a significant impact, assisting companies such as Chegg, Groupon, and Mercury, along with more than 8,000 other organizations, to streamline the often tedious code review process made more complex by AI-generated code. Gill emphasized that CodeRabbit's understanding of a company’s codebase allows it to effectively pinpoint bugs, potentially reducing the need for human code reviewers by up to 50%. However, the landscape of AI code review is competitive, with rivals like Graphite and Greptile also making strides in the field. Despite competition from integrated solutions offered by major AI coding assistants like Claude Code and Cursor, Gill believes that customers will ultimately favor a dedicated solution like CodeRabbit for its depth and technical capabilities. While the demand for AI code review tools is on the rise, the technology still faces challenges in delivering fully reliable fixes for the bugs and unusable code generated by AI systems. This unreliability has led to the emergence of new roles in the corporate world, such as the 'vibe code cleanup specialist'.
