
Coal remains the most environmentally damaging fuel, generating the highest levels of carbon emissions for each unit of energy produced. In addition to its carbon footprint, burning coal releases sulfur dioxide aerosols and various nitrogen oxides, along with coal ash that harbors numerous toxic metals. The health benefits from transitioning away from coal power greatly outweigh the costs associated with new energy generation technologies. However, a recent study reveals that the detrimental effects of coal pollution extend beyond human health; it hampers the efficiency of renewable energy sources, particularly solar power. Researchers have discovered that both natural and anthropogenic aerosols significantly diminish the energy output from solar panels, resulting in a loss of hundreds of terawatts annually, primarily due to emissions from coal combustion. Conducted by a research team in the UK, this study utilized a comprehensive global inventory of solar energy facilities, which combined existing data with AI-analyzed satellite imagery and crowdsourced information. By analyzing satellite images, the researchers assessed the sizes of these solar installations, and location-specific weather data allowed them to estimate the potential power output. This analysis revealed that, in 2023 alone, more than 25% of potential solar energy production was lost—20% attributed to cloud cover and an additional 6% due to aerosols. This translates to a staggering loss of over 500 terawatt-hours, equating to the total annual output of 84 coal plants, each with a generating capacity of 1 GW. Over the past five years, solar capacity installations have increased enough to theoretically produce an additional 250 terawatt-hours of power annually. Yet, around 75 terawatt-hours of that potential has been lost to aerosol interference. Despite the consistent growth in solar capacity, the impacts of coal-derived pollution remain a significant challenge for maximizing solar energy production.
