UK retail giant Co-op confirms hackers stole all 6.5 million customer records

In a significant security breach, Co-op Group's chief executive, Shirine Khoury-Haq, revealed on Wednesday that hackers successfully infiltrated the company and stole personal details of all 6.5 million customers during an attack in April. Speaking to BBC News, Khoury-Haq confirmed the hackers accessed sensitive member data, which includes names, addresses, and contact information. Fortunately, the Co-op was able to prevent further damage by shutting down its network before the attackers could deploy ransomware to lock down its systems. However, the response led to considerable disruption across the retailer's U.K. back offices and grocery stores, impacting operations severely. This incident is part of a wider wave of cyberattacks targeting the U.K. retail sector. Other notable companies, such as Marks & Spencer and Harrods, have also fallen victim to similar attacks, with customer data being compromised or targeted. The cyberattacks have been linked to a hacking group known as Scattered Spider, known for employing deceptive techniques to manipulate IT support teams into granting them access. In July, U.K. authorities took action by arresting four individuals in connection with these cyber incidents, including a 20-year-old woman and two men aged 19, along with a 17-year-old youth. They face serious charges, including hacking, blackmail, and affiliation with organized crime. Following these breaches, the hackers are reportedly shifting their focus towards the airline and transportation sectors, as well as insurance companies, which hold extensive consumer data. The financial ramifications of the Co-op's breach remain uncertain, particularly as reports suggest that the company lacked cybersecurity insurance during the time of the attack, potentially leading to significant costs.
