Junk-filled garages hurt EV sales as people don’t have room for chargers

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the United States faces a myriad of challenges, many of which stem from the current political climate. The administration's recent policy shifts have diminished existing EV subsidies and relaxed vehicle pollution regulations, creating a less favorable environment for electric cars. After enjoying a sustained period of growth, EV sales are now witnessing a decline, with brands like Genesis and Volvo struggling to attract customers to their electric models. A significant barrier to EV adoption has been highlighted in a recent market research study conducted by Telemetry's Vice President, Sam Abuelsamid. The study reveals that concerns about charging infrastructure are a primary deterrent for potential EV buyers. Surprisingly, one of the most overlooked obstacles is the clutter in many Americans' garages, which limits their ability to install home charging solutions. While DC fast chargers often dominate the conversation around EV infrastructure, the reality is that most charging occurs at home using AC chargers—accounting for a staggering 80% of all EV charging. The data indicates that homeowners are crucial to the EV market, with a study from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory revealing that 42% of homeowners have access to a level 2 (240 V) outlet near their parking area. However, this number could increase significantly if homeowners opted to clear out their garages, potentially raising the percentage to 68%. Abuelsamid emphasizes that 90% of residential properties have the potential to accommodate a 240 V outlet where vehicles are parked. He suggests that the way homeowners utilize their garages—whether for parking or storage—will play a critical role in the future of EV adoption. The intent to use garages for parking may soon prove to be just as important as the physical capability to install charging outlets.
