ClickUp adds new AI assistant to better compete with Slack and Notion

ClickUp is stepping up its game in the productivity sector with a comprehensive redesign of its platform, integrating new AI assistant functionalities aimed at consolidating user experience. This ambitious update was largely facilitated by ClickUp's recent acquisition of Qatalog, an enterprise search startup that has garnered over $29.5 million in investments from notable backers including Salesforce Ventures and Atomico. In its latest 4.0 release, ClickUp introduces two innovative AI agents. The first is a communication-focused assistant that actively seeks out questions and provides answers by tapping into both internal knowledge and external resources such as Google Drive and Gmail. Meanwhile, the second assistant, known as Brain, is a versatile tool capable of generating ideas, scheduling meetings based on team availability, and managing tasks. Brain is designed to seamlessly integrate into the ClickUp interface, residing in the sidebar for easy access. The new features aim to streamline task management and enhance communication, allowing users to effortlessly transition between tasks, documents, and messages. ClickUp 4.0 facilitates interaction with an internal forum timeline and provides options for viewing tasks directly from the sidebar. By offering a combination of calendar management, communication tools, and task tracking, ClickUp is positioning itself as a formidable competitor against platforms like Notion, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. Further enhancing its offerings, ClickUp has introduced AI-powered summaries and live video calls, dubbed Syncups. Users can now initiate Syncups from any channel, and the AI assistant can record, transcribe, and distribute notes from these sessions to all participants. The calendar feature has also been upgraded to automatically adjust meetings and tasks based on priority settings. In a conversation with TechCrunch, ClickUp CEO Zeb Evans shared the company’s long-term vision to replace all work software with a unified platform. He emphasized the importance of flexible data models in the AI era, highlighting the challenges of visualizing AI interactions within a chat interface. With impressive growth, ClickUp has surpassed $300 million in annual recurring revenue and plans to go public within the next two years. The startup has raised over $537 million in funding from investors like a16z and Tiger Global, positioning itself for continued expansion in the competitive productivity landscape.
