Anthropic’s Claude popularity with paying consumers is skyrocketing

In the midst of its ongoing clash with the Department of Defense, Anthropic has seen a remarkable rise in consumer interest, particularly in its AI product, Claude. This heightened visibility has been fueled by the company's humorous Super Bowl commercials that targeted OpenAI, alongside the increasing adoption of Claude Code. A detailed analysis conducted by Indagari, a firm specializing in consumer transaction data, reveals that Claude is attracting paid subscribers at an unprecedented rate. While the analysis encompasses billions of anonymized credit card transactions from around 28 million U.S. consumers, it does come with limitations. The data does not account for every consumer, leaving gaps in understanding Anthropic's total user base. Estimates regarding the number of Claude users vary widely, ranging from 18 million to 30 million, as the company has not publicly shared these figures. However, a spokesperson confirmed that paid subscriptions for Claude have more than doubled this year. Notably, between January and February, there was a significant uptick in consumers willing to pay for Claude. Additionally, many former users returned to the platform during this period. Indagari's findings indicate that the majority of new subscribers are opting for the lower-cost “Pro” plan at $20 per month, compared to higher tiers priced at $100 or $200. The spike in consumer awareness of Claude can be traced back to several factors. Anthropic's Super Bowl ads, which humorously criticized ChatGPT for introducing ads, emphasized that Claude would never adopt such practices. This clever marketing strategy resonated with viewers and effectively highlighted differences between the two platforms. The situation escalated in late January, when multiple media outlets began reporting on a significant disagreement between Anthropic and the DoD regarding the permissible uses of its AI technology. Anthropic's refusal to allow its models to be used for lethal autonomous operations or mass surveillance has drawn public attention, culminating in a firm statement from CEO Dario Amodei in late February amidst threats from the DoD that could jeopardize the company's operations. As a result of this controversy, new user growth surged, particularly between the media reports in late January and Amodei's public address on February 26. Alongside the drama, the introduction of Claude Code and Claude Cowork in January has also contributed to subscription growth. A recently launched feature, Computer Use, allows Claude to perform tasks independently on a computer, further enhancing its appeal to users. This feature, however, is exclusive to paying subscribers. Despite these advancements, Claude still has a considerable distance to cover to catch up with ChatGPT. Although OpenAI experienced a spike in uninstalls following its agreement with the DoD, data from Indagari indicates that it continues to attract new paid subscribers at a rapid pace, maintaining its status as the leading consumer AI platform.
