Anthropic has announced significant enhancements to the free tier of its AI tool, Claude, providing users with access to previously premium features. This upgrade comes amid a competitive environment where rival OpenAI is reportedly considering new monetization methods, including the introduction of advertisements in its ChatGPT service. In a recent update shared via a post on X (formerly Twitter), Anthropic revealed, "We're bringing some of Claude’s most-used features to the free plan." Among the newly available tools are file creation capabilities powered by Sonnet 4.5, which were once exclusive to paying subscribers. Additionally, users can now utilize connectors that link Claude with third-party applications such as Canva, Slack, Notion, and Zapier. The improvements don’t stop there. Free-tier users can also edit a variety of documents, including Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, Word documents, and PDFs at no cost. Furthermore, the introduction of 'skills' allows users to develop custom functionalities tailored to specific workflows. Another notable upgrade is the extension of conversation limits for free users, providing longer interactions with Claude, albeit still with certain restrictions. The new feature known as 'compaction' enables the system to automatically condense previous conversations for easier reference. In a strategic move, Anthropic previously announced that Claude would remain ad-free, contrasting with OpenAI’s recent decision to experiment with advertisements. This competitive dynamic has sparked a creative advertising campaign from Anthropic that subtly critiques OpenAI’s monetization strategies. In response, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman described the advertisements as "dishonest." With these enhancements to Claude’s free tier, Anthropic signals its commitment to competing vigorously for user engagement and differentiation in the AI market.
