The company has introduced an 'identity verification' process that requires certain users to submit a government-issued ID, such as a passport or driver's license, along with a live selfie. This initiative is currently being rolled out for select use cases, as detailed in Anthropic's Help Center. Anthropic has positioned itself as the 'data controller,' outlining how and where the ID data will be utilized and the duration of its retention. However, the actual collection and storage of this sensitive information will be managed by Persona Identities, an ID verification startup. According to Anthropic, Persona is contractually bound to use the data solely for verification purposes and enhancing its fraud prevention capabilities. The reasoning behind this new requirement stems from instances of suspicious activity that could indicate fraudulent or abusive behavior, which contravenes the company's usage policies. An Anthropic spokesperson clarified that the verification process is only triggered in a limited number of cases where such behavior is detected. If a user's activity is deemed a violation, there is a risk of account suspension. Reports from users on social media platform X reveal that the ID verification requests have already started to surface. One user shared a screenshot of a prompt in Claude, which stated that the identity check would only take two minutes, requiring access to an ID and mobile camera. Another screenshot showcased a confirmation message post-verification, thanking users for completing the process with a celebratory graphic. However, the response from the community has been largely negative, with many expressing their discontent over what they perceive as intrusive measures. Comments such as 'Anthropic making unexplainable decisions' and 'We are living in 1984' have surfaced, reflecting a growing concern among users about privacy and data security. In an effort to clarify its stance, Anthropic has also provided a list of assurances in its Help Center. The company confirmed that it will not utilize ID verification data for training its models, nor will it share this data with any parties outside of Anthropic and Persona, except when legally mandated.
