Anthropic’s Fable 5 can make weirdly fun video games with the click of a button

Anthropic has unveiled Claude Fable 5, the highly anticipated first public version of its Mythos model, and it’s making waves in the world of artificial intelligence. Ethan Mollick, a distinguished AI researcher from the University of Pennsylvania, has been experimenting with Fable and has reported remarkable findings. In his assessments, Mollick noted that Fable significantly outperformed nearly all other public models he's tested, delivering impressive results across diverse tasks. He highlighted its capability to run for hours while executing complex, multi-page specifications. One of the most captivating aspects of Fable is its ability to generate a variety of video games with minimal input. Mollick shared his experience of creating games from a single prompt using Claude Code. Among these games is a nostalgic rendition of Snake, where players navigate a constantly moving serpent, consuming apples while avoiding the edges of the screen—an addictive throwback to the arcade era. Another creation, Strata, immerses players in an expansive network of underground tunnels with the objective of lighting lanterns. While the graphics may evoke memories of early gaming, the accomplishment of generating such a game from just one prompt is commendable. Mollick also crafted Duino, inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke's famous poems, where players explore a dark landscape while passages appear on the screen. Although the gameplay is simple, the animation adds a layer of intrigue. In addition to games, Fable was used to create an isochronic map, vividly illustrating travel times between locations with impressive accuracy. This showcases the transformative potential of AI in simplifying complex software projects, allowing what once required extensive teams to be generated from a single command.
