Anthropic has introduced an innovative memory feature for its Claude chatbot, allowing users to easily access and reference previous conversations. Launched on Monday, this new functionality aims to streamline project continuity, enabling users to pick up where they left off without having to rehash earlier discussions. In a demonstration on YouTube, a user queried Claude about their work prior to a vacation. The chatbot efficiently retrieved past chats, summarized key points, and suggested ways to resume the project. "Never lose track of your work again," Anthropic stated in its announcement. "Claude now remembers your past conversations, allowing you to continue projects, reference discussions, and expand on your ideas without starting from scratch each time." The memory feature is compatible with the web, desktop, and mobile versions of Claude, and it can categorize conversations into specific projects and workspaces. It is currently accessible for Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers through the “Search and reference chats” option in profile settings, with plans for broader rollout in the near future. However, it's important to note that this tool operates differently from the persistent memory capabilities seen in OpenAI's ChatGPT. Anthropic spokesperson Ryan Donegan emphasized that Claude will only access past conversations when explicitly requested and will not create a long-term user profile. This development arrives amid fierce competition between Anthropic and OpenAI, both of which are enhancing their offerings with features like voice interaction, larger context windows, and new subscription models. Just last week, OpenAI unveiled GPT-5, while Anthropic is reportedly pursuing funding with a valuation of up to $170 billion. The introduction of memory features has ignited discussions recently, particularly regarding ChatGPT’s persistent recall functionalities, which have received both commendation and concern. Users praise the productivity and personal reflection benefits, while others voice apprehensions over privacy and potential impacts on mental health.
