Claude's popularity is forcing it to hit the brakes on users

Anthropic has recently implemented new usage restrictions for its AI model, Claude, as the platform experiences an influx of users. Effective this week, the company has modified the session limits for free, Pro, and Max subscribers. While the overall weekly usage limits remain the same, users may find that they reach their session caps more quickly during peak hours, defined as 5 AM to 11 AM Pacific Time. Thariq Shihipar, a member of the Claude team, shared on X that around 7% of users could encounter session limits that they previously would not have faced, particularly those on Pro tiers. He advised that users running token-heavy background operations might benefit from scheduling these tasks during off-peak hours to maximize their session limits. The adjustments come as Anthropic responds to the soaring interest in Claude, particularly following CEO Dario Amodei's decision to deny the Pentagon unrestricted access to the company's AI models. Amodei has emphasized that the company’s primary focus remains on its enterprise solutions. As competition intensifies in the AI space, Anthropic is grappling with the challenges of meeting compute demands. Innovations like OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent, have enabled users to leverage AI capabilities more extensively, leading to increased consumption of computing resources. In a related development, OpenAI recently announced its decision to discontinue Sora, a TikTok-like AI video generation app, to concentrate its computing power on core services. Amodei has also commented on the ambitious infrastructure plans of competitors, suggesting that some in the industry may be taking unwarranted risks. He noted, "There’s an irreducible risk here, and I absolutely don’t want to deny this, but some players are not managing that risk well." As Anthropic continues to scale its operations, Shihipar reassured users of ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency and promised to keep them updated on future developments.
