Amazon orders Perplexity to pull its AI shopping agent from online store

In a significant development, Amazon has formally directed the AI startup Perplexity to withdraw its shopping assistant, Comet, from its online platform. This decision follows numerous warnings regarding violations of Amazon’s terms of service, and both companies confirmed the action on Tuesday, highlighting the ongoing friction between established tech giants and innovative AI-driven commerce solutions. Perplexity responded to this pressure with a blog post entitled “Bullying is not innovation,” wherein they accused Amazon of leveraging its market power to hinder technological advancement. The company disclosed that it received a stern legal ultimatum from Amazon, which insisted that Comet users refrain from utilizing their AI assistants when interacting with Amazon. They labeled this as Amazon's initial legal confrontation with an AI entity, framing it as a larger threat to internet users at large. Amazon contends that Perplexity’s AI assistant failed to properly identify itself as an automated tool while engaging on its platform. The e-commerce behemoth pointed out that other third-party applications typically disclose their identity when transacting on behalf of users. Amazon stated, “It is how others operate, including food delivery apps and the restaurants they take orders for.” The company outlined a straightforward solution: Perplexity needs to clearly reveal its identity when acting on behalf of a user. However, Amazon also signaled a potential willingness to ban such agents entirely, emphasizing the need for transparency in third-party applications that facilitate purchases from other businesses. Perplexity claims that Amazon's actions are driven by financial interests, asserting that tools like Comet could undermine Amazon’s revenue from advertising and product placements by circumventing promotional content. For instance, a bot searching for a laundry basket would not be influenced by related product suggestions or upselling tactics. This is not the first time Perplexity has been under scrutiny for its data practices. Earlier in the year, it faced accusations from Cloudflare for scraping websites that had opted out of AI crawlers. Supporters of Perplexity defended its browser, arguing that it only accessed publicly available pages in response to user queries, akin to how a human-operated browser would function. Yet, critics pointed out that the company often obscured its identity while doing so.
