Elon Musk says Anthropic's philosopher has no stake in the future because she doesn't have kids. Here's her response.

Amanda Askell, a noted Scottish philosopher at Anthropic, plays a pivotal role in shaping the personality and ethical framework of the company's chatbot, Claude. Recently, she found herself at the center of a debate sparked by Elon Musk, who questioned her qualifications due to her lack of children. In a post on X, Musk stated, "Those without children lack a stake in the future," in response to a profile on Askell published by The Wall Street Journal. Interestingly, the article does not clarify whether Askell has children. Musk, who has developed a distinct personality for his own chatbot, Grok, is a father to 14 children and is known for advocating a pro-natalist viewpoint that resonates with many in the tech industry. In a thoughtful reply, Askell showcased her characteristic intellectual wit, stating, "I think it depends on how much you care about people in general vs. your own kin." She emphasized her intention to have children in the future but argued that her concern for the well-being of all people gives her a significant interest in the future. Askell further elaborated, acknowledging that parental investment can profoundly affect one's perspective on the future, yet she maintained her belief in the importance of caring for the broader community. The exchange between Musk and Askell garnered a wide range of reactions on social media, reflecting the polarizing nature of their differing viewpoints. A day later, Askell shared another thought, saying, "I'm too right wing for the left and I'm too left wing for the right. I'm too into humanities for those in tech and I'm too into tech for those in the humanities. What I'm learning is that failing to polarize is itself quite polarizing." This back-and-forth highlights the complexities of personal beliefs in the intersection of technology and philosophy.
