Civilization VIIfinally lets you build a civ that stands the test of time

Fans of the iconic strategy game franchise can rejoice as the latest update for Civilization VII, aptly named 'Test of Time,' brings back the essence of building a civilization that lasts. The game, which has captivated players for over three decades, faced criticism after its initial launch due to a shift in gameplay that allowed players to switch civilizations mid-game. Many fans expressed disappointment, feeling that the original promise of creating a lasting civilization was undermined. This new update aims to address those concerns by reworking several fundamental systems. Players will once again have the opportunity to start with a single civilization and guide it through the ages, preserving the core experience that fans have come to cherish. I spent a week exploring the enhancements brought by the 'Test of Time' update and had insightful discussions with Ed Beach, the franchise's creative director, and Matt Schembari, the head of product. For newcomers, Civilization VII introduced a unique structure that divides the game into three distinct ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Each age comes with its own technology and culture trees, as well as specific gameplay mechanics. This design choice was intended to resolve longstanding balancing issues that often plagued earlier titles in the series. However, if this departure from the traditional formula hasn't resonated with you yet, the 'Test of Time' update may not drastically change your perspective on the game. While 'Test of Time' allows for greater player freedom within its established framework, it still retains the core structure that defines Civilization VII. The update seeks to blend innovative ideas with the classic gameplay elements that have defined the franchise, ensuring that both new and veteran players can find enjoyment in their journey to build a civilization that truly stands the test of time.
