City Detect, which uses AI to help cities stay safe and clean, raises $13M Series A

City Detect, an innovative startup leveraging vision AI to assist municipalities in monitoring the condition of their infrastructure, has successfully raised $13 million in a Series A funding round led by Prudence Venture Capital. Founded in 2021, the company is spearheaded by CEO Gavin Baum-Blake, who noted that the initiative arose from the pressing challenges cities face regarding urban decay and blight. The company employs advanced computer vision technology by mounting cameras on public vehicles, such as garbage trucks and street sweepers. As these vehicles traverse city streets, they capture images of nearby buildings. City Detect then utilizes AI to analyze these images, providing a unique tool for local governments to identify and address issues like graffiti, illegal dumping, and general litter. Baum-Blake explained that current methods of tracking deteriorating buildings are largely manual, with human inspectors typically managing only about 50 assessments per week. In contrast, City Detect’s technology can evaluate thousands of locations in the same timeframe. This capability positions the company as a disruptive force against the traditional status quo. The patented technology also incorporates privacy features, ensuring that faces and license plates are blurred. Additionally, it can differentiate between street art and vandalism, and assists in monitoring landlord compliance regarding property maintenance. Baum-Blake elaborated that the system can identify structural issues and assess storm damage. Currently, City Detect operates in at least 17 cities, including Dallas and Miami, and has raised a total of $15 million to date. The company is a member of the GovAI Coalition, an initiative focused on AI governance, and adheres to SOC 2 Type II standards for privacy. City Detect has also established a Responsible AI policy in response to inquiries from local governments seeking clarity on vendor commitments. The newly acquired funding will allow City Detect to expand its engineering team and enhance its storm-detection capabilities, with ambitions to broaden its reach across the United States. Baum-Blake expressed enthusiasm about the efficiency improvements observed in the departments they work with, noting an increase in timely resolutions of urban blight without the issuance of citations. "It’s exciting to see technology-forward municipalities embrace predictive AI like our models," he stated. The funding round also saw participation from Zeal Capital Partners, Knoll Ventures, and Las Olas Venture Capital.
