In a significant shift for the Cities franchise, longtime developer Colossal Order will hand over the reins to Iceflake, a Finnish studio and subsidiary of publisher Paradox Interactive. This unexpected change was announced on Paradox’s official forums, revealing that both entities have decided to pursue independent paths. The announcement, made on a Monday morning, emphasized that the decision was made with careful consideration, aiming to ensure a strong future for the Cities: Skylines franchise. Both Colossal Order and Paradox expressed their gratitude for their shared history and the support from the Cities community. Colossal Order has plans to embark on new projects and explore fresh creative avenues, while Iceflake, which joined the Paradox family in 2020, is gearing up to take charge of Cities: Skylines II. Iceflake has been focusing on updates and DLC for its previous title, Surviving the Aftermath, and is now set to oversee future free updates, expansions, and content packs for Cities: Skylines II starting in 2026. Additionally, Iceflake is working on the long-anticipated console versions of Cities: Skylines II, initially expected to coincide with the PC launch in 2023.
