Cisco CEO says tech is entering a 'networking supercycle' as stock pops 14% on strong AI demand

In a recent interview with CNBC, Cisco's CEO Chuck Robbins shared insights on the significant surge in demand for artificial intelligence tools, which he believes is ushering in a 'networking supercycle' for the tech industry. Following this announcement, Cisco's stock experienced a remarkable 14% increase, marking its most substantial gain in over twenty years. The California-based networking giant exceeded its projections for AI infrastructure and hyperscaler orders for the fiscal year, raising its revenue forecast from $5 billion to an impressive $9 billion. In a strategic shift towards AI-focused initiatives, Cisco announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 5%. Robbins emphasized the need for a swift reallocation of resources to keep pace with the rapidly evolving market. Despite trailing behind competitors like Nvidia in the AI sector, Cisco has recently outperformed its previous highs from the internet boom, as investors recognize the essential networking infrastructure required for expanding data centers and AI applications. Robbins acknowledged the challenges in predicting future bookings due to the dynamic nature of the AI landscape, revealing that Cisco has chosen to forgo certain projects with hyperscalers. "We may not have complete visibility yet, but we understand our relationships and the commitments from our partners well enough to feel confident about our direction," Robbins explained. He also addressed the growing enthusiasm around AI technologies, which has sparked discussions at the highest levels of government and the tech community. Cisco is actively engaging with its clients on AI models and is participating in Anthropic's Project Glasswing, allowing select businesses to explore the model's capabilities and its implications for cybersecurity. Robbins noted that concerns regarding potential risks have accelerated the need for businesses to enhance their security measures. "Agility and readiness are crucial in this rapidly changing environment," he stated.
