Cisco Systems Inc. has announced impressive earnings and revenue figures for its fiscal first quarter, surpassing analysts' expectations and resulting in a nearly 5% increase in its stock price during after-hours trading. The company reported an 8% rise in revenue, reaching $13.84 billion compared to the same period last year. Net income also saw a significant boost, climbing to $2.86 billion, or 72 cents per share, up from $2.71 billion, or 68 cents per share, a year prior. This marks Cisco's fourth consecutive quarter of growth, reversing a trend of four straight quarters of year-over-year revenue declines attributed to economic uncertainty and postponed spending from government entities. Cisco's largest business segment, networking, experienced a robust 15% increase in sales, totaling $7.77 billion. This growth surpassed analysts' expectations, who had forecasted revenue of $7.47 billion for that segment, according to StreetAccount. Notably, much of the increase in data center expenditures is driven by investments in artificial intelligence, particularly in servers equipped with advanced graphics processing units from Nvidia. In a strategic move to capitalize on the AI trend, Cisco recently unveiled a new Ethernet switch utilizing Nvidia technology. Looking ahead, Cisco has projected revenue for the fiscal second quarter to be between $15 billion and $15.2 billion, exceeding the average estimate of $14.6 billion. The company anticipates adjusted earnings per share of $1.01 to $1.03, surpassing the consensus estimate of 99 cents. For the entire fiscal year, Cisco forecasts revenue between $60.2 billion and $61 billion, with earnings per share estimated at $4.08 to $4.14. Analysts predict sales of $59.7 billion and earnings per share of $4.04. As of the close of trading on Wednesday, Cisco shares have increased by 25% this year, outperforming the Nasdaq, which has gained 21%.
