Cisco has unveiled a significant restructuring plan that will lead to the layoff of more than 4,000 employees, which constitutes over 5% of its total workforce. This bold move is aimed at enhancing its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and reallocating resources towards other rapidly developing sectors within the company. In light of increased demand from major tech firms, termed 'hyperscalers,' Cisco has also revised its annual revenue forecast upward. However, the specific teams and regions affected by these layoffs have yet to be disclosed. Employees slated for layoffs are expected to receive notifications on May 14. In an internal communication, CEO Chuck Robbins highlighted that Cisco achieved a remarkable Q3 revenue of $15.8 billion, reflecting a 12% year-over-year growth. Despite this success, Robbins acknowledged the necessity for these difficult decisions, emphasizing that companies poised to thrive in the AI landscape must maintain focus and adaptability. Cisco is now redirecting its efforts towards critical areas such as silicon development, optical technologies, cybersecurity, and AI-powered workplace tools, while scaling back in other sectors. Ryan Lee, senior vice president of product and strategy at Direxion, noted that any concerns over the slight reduction in workforce are overshadowed by the broader implications of increased capital expenditure from hyperscalers. To support those affected, Cisco has committed to providing severance packages exceeding $1 billion, along with access to Cisco U courses and certifications for up to a year, ensuring that impacted employees have resources to aid in their transition.
