Circle raises $222 million from BlackRock, Apollo in Arc token presale valued at $3 billion

Circle Internet Group has successfully raised $222 million through the presale of Arc, its new blockchain's native token. This funding is part of Circle's strategic shift beyond its primary focus on the USDC stablecoin. Leading the investment was Andreessen Horowitz, which contributed $75 million. Notable investors also include major players like BlackRock, Apollo Funds, Intercontinental Exchange, and others. The successful fundraising values Arc at an impressive $3 billion. Circle's CEO, Jeremy Allaire, emphasized the importance of blockchain infrastructure, comparing it to mobile operating systems and cloud platforms. "We aim to create an operating system with numerous stakeholders involved, including significant companies that will help govern it alongside us," Allaire explained in an exclusive interview. Arc aims to serve as a public blockchain tailored for institutional finance. Allaire highlighted that the platform transcends stablecoins and payment systems, asserting that it has the potential to support the broader economy. He described the economy not just in terms of value representation but as encompassing all contracts that underpin financial relationships and the governance systems that manage these economic institutions. As a key player in this venture, Circle holds a 25% stake in the initial supply of 10 billion Arc tokens, positioning itself to operate validator infrastructure, generate new revenue streams, and earn staking income. Of the total tokens, 60% will be distributed to contributors building on the Arc network, while the remaining 15% will be set aside as a long-term reserve. Allaire noted the growing trend of machine-operated economies, where AI agents increasingly handle tasks traditionally managed by humans. He stated, "We are entering an era where software will drive the economic system, with AI agents taking on operational roles." In line with its ambitions, Circle unveiled a suite of tools designed to enable developers to create AI agents capable of managing transactions, accessing online services, and making payments using USDC. This initiative reflects a broader trend within the crypto space, as companies pivot from their speculative pasts toward sustainable business models with diversified revenue streams. Despite USDC's status as a trusted digital dollar for various institutions, challenges remain. The infrastructure supporting USDC was originally designed for individual users, prompting the need for Arc to evolve the ecosystem. If successful, this could allow Circle to gain greater control over the infrastructure that supports USDC, which currently relies heavily on networks like Ethereum and Solana for operations. The launch of Arc also coincides with growing regulatory frameworks that endorse stablecoins, although concerns persist about potential competition from banks and fintechs launching their own dollar tokens. Circle's presale marks a significant moment as it becomes the first publicly listed company to engage in such an initiative, raising capital and fostering an early user community. In this evolving landscape, Allaire remarked on the transformative potential of tokenization, suggesting that all companies will eventually adopt token-based shares, reshaping how businesses engage with customers and stakeholders.
