After facing a challenging period marked by investor concerns regarding the AI expansion, chip stocks have rebounded dramatically this April. Following a 6.3% decline in March, the Nasdaq's PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index, which tracks the largest U.S.-listed chip firms, surged by an impressive 35.2% by mid-April, reflecting a renewed interest in the sector. Among the notable performers is Intel, which celebrated its most successful trading day since 1987 last Friday, buoyed by earnings that exceeded expectations and optimistic future guidance. Nvidia also made headlines as its market capitalization crossed the $5 trillion threshold prior to its earnings report. Apple saw its stock rise after reporting revenue growth in the latest quarter, along with forecasts that surpassed market predictions. Other major U.S. semiconductor companies, including AMD and Micron, have also shown significant gains, as have leading firms in Europe. Bruce Bateman, chief analyst at Omdia, described this month’s performance as “historic,” emphasizing that such winning streaks have not been observed since the 1970s. The recent rally is attributed to a mix of renewed faith in the AI infrastructure cycle and strong earnings reports, with many analysts believing that demand is expanding beyond just a few prominent AI companies. David Miller, a senior portfolio manager at Catalyst Funds, noted that in the U.S., investor sentiment is buoyed by the perception that AI demand is translating into real revenue growth, resulting in improved earnings forecasts. Although earlier this year, fears regarding massive AI spending plans from major tech firms led to a $1 trillion selloff in February, recent weeks have seen a shift in investor sentiment towards a more positive outlook. Michael Field, chief equity strategist at Morningstar, explained that ongoing positive news from AI infrastructure companies has helped investors gain confidence in the scale of capital expenditures, leading to improved market sentiment. However, the ongoing conflict in Iran has also contributed to increased chip orders as companies brace for potential supply chain disruptions. Despite the optimistic market narrative, Bateman cautioned that the sector may be ignoring significant challenges, including supply chain bottlenecks exacerbated by the Iran conflict. Key materials like helium, essential for chip manufacturing, have faced export restrictions, while delays in semiconductor deliveries from Asia have been reported due to disrupted flight paths. Furthermore, the U.S. data center expansion is reportedly encountering delays and shortages of vital equipment such as transformers. While some analysts express caution about the market's optimistic view, others remain bullish, emphasizing that continued demand for computational power will drive growth in AI infrastructure projects. Miller stated that the sector could continue to thrive if three conditions hold: sustained resilience in hyperscaler capital expenditures, upward revisions in earnings estimates, and investor confidence in the returns from AI infrastructure spending. In other industry news, Anthropic is reportedly in discussions with investors to raise funds at a staggering $900 billion valuation. Samsung Electronics announced a record eightfold increase in first-quarter operating profits, driven by its chip division's explosive growth. A notable data center company has paused its AI infrastructure investments in the Middle East due to the Iran conflict. Additionally, the Department of Defense is expanding its use of Google’s Gemini AI model after dropping Anthropic, citing supply chain risks. Meanwhile, top researchers are leaving major tech firms to create startups, attracting substantial investment in the burgeoning AI sector. Finally, the founder of a new AI startup, Ineffable Intelligence, announced a $1.1 billion funding round at a $5.1 billion valuation, aiming to achieve groundbreaking advancements in technology and science.
