Landing postponed for Chinese astronauts after suspected space debris strike

The planned return of three Chinese astronauts from the Tiangong space station has been postponed due to concerns about potential damage from space debris. Initially set to reenter the atmosphere and land in Inner Mongolia's remote desert on Wednesday, the crew has been instructed to remain aboard the station as engineers conduct a thorough investigation. The China Manned Space Agency, which operates under military oversight, announced this decision late Tuesday via a brief statement on Weibo, a popular Chinese social media platform. The agency indicated that the Shenzhou 20 spacecraft might have been struck by small debris, prompting an immediate impact analysis and risk assessment. To prioritize the safety and health of the astronauts, as well as to ensure the mission's overall success, officials have decided to delay the Shenzhou 20 return mission, originally scheduled for November 5. The astronauts aboard Shenzhou 20 arrived at the Tiangong station in April, and their replacements from the Shenzhou 21 mission docked with the station just last Friday, temporarily increasing the crew to six. Following several days of collaborative operations, a handover ceremony was conducted early Tuesday to officially transfer command of the station to the new crew. However, less than a day later, Chinese authorities opted to postpone Shenzhou 20’s scheduled departure. The statement did not specify which part of the spacecraft might have sustained damage, the basis for the suspicion of space debris impact, or how long the delay might last. The Shenzhou 20 spacecraft consists of three modules, including a landing capsule situated between the crew quarters and a propulsion module. These modules separate before reentry, with the landing capsule descending via parachute while the other components burn up upon reentering the atmosphere.
