A previous notice from the ministry emphasized the need for universities to align their program offerings with national strategies and technological advancements. The potential for the embodied intelligence market is substantial, with projections estimating it could reach approximately 5.3 billion yuan (around $750 million) this year. Further forecasts suggest a remarkable growth trajectory, with the market expected to soar to 400 billion yuan by 2030 and surpass 1 trillion yuan by 2035, according to insights from the Development Research Center of the State Council. The Beijing Institute of Technology noted a pressing need for around one million professionals in the embodied intelligence field. If approved, this major will be a vital addition to China’s higher education landscape. The push for advancements in AI and robotics has been ongoing, with institutions like Shanghai Jiao Tong University already operating a 'Machine Vision and Intelligence Group.' Additionally, Zhejiang University has established a 'Humanoid Robot Innovation Research Institute' focused on creating advanced humanoid robots. The competitive landscape in China’s tech sector is rapidly evolving, with companies specializing in humanoid robotics and autonomous systems striving to keep pace with global innovators. Recently, Ant Group unveiled R1, a humanoid robot that has drawn comparisons to Tesla's Optimus, showcasing the country's technological ambitions. In the U.S., leading universities such as Stanford and Carnegie Mellon have been offering courses in robotics and AI for years. China's proposed 'embodied intelligence' major is strategically designed with career prospects in focus. The Beijing Institute of Technology plans to admit 120 undergraduates annually, with a significant proportion expected to transition into graduate studies or enter the workforce directly. Major state-owned enterprises and tech giants, including Huawei and Alibaba, are anticipated to recruit graduates from this program, ensuring a pathway for students into the burgeoning tech industry.
