Drunken boxing and backflips: China put on a robot kung fu display that shows how fast its robotics industry is growing

During the recent Lunar New Year celebrations, China showcased its burgeoning robotics industry in a spectacular fashion. At the highly anticipated Spring Festival Gala, humanoid robots from the Chinese startup Unitree Robotics captivated audiences with a stunning kung fu performance. These advanced machines executed flips, lunges, and wielded swords and nunchucks in a meticulously choreographed routine, performed just inches away from child dancers. One of the standout moments featured a sequence inspired by the traditional martial arts style known as 'drunken boxing,' where robots staggered and fell before regaining their balance. This performance highlighted remarkable advancements in robotic control and coordination compared to last year's simpler displays. The Spring Festival Gala, often referred to as the Chinese equivalent of the Super Bowl due to its vast viewership, also included segments from other prominent robotics companies such as MagicLab, Galbot, and Noetix. Reactions on social media reflected astonishment among viewers, particularly regarding the rapid advancements in technology. A user named Ma Xiao noted how last year's robots could only perform basic actions, but now they were showcasing kung fu, flips, and synchronized dances, leaving many amazed. Another user, DKKD, shared a video of friends' surprised reactions, stating, "Three Americans were scared by the Spring Festival robot," and expressed disbelief at the evolution of the technology. In an interview following the gala, Unitree CEO Wang Xingxing revealed ambitious plans for the company, aiming to ship between 10,000 to 20,000 humanoid robots this year, a significant increase from 5,500 in 2025. Global shipments of humanoid robots are anticipated to reach tens of thousands, with Unitree playing a crucial role in this growth. The race to lead in humanoid robotics is intensifying among Chinese firms. Notably, Ant Group unveiled its R1 robot, drawing comparisons to Tesla’s Optimus model, while XPeng showcased its latest humanoid, Iron, described as highly human-like. Moreover, elite Chinese universities are gearing up to develop talent in this field, with the Ministry of Education planning to introduce a new undergraduate major in 'embodied intelligence,' which merges AI with robotics. However, the journey has not been without hiccups. XPeng's Iron famously fell during its debut earlier this year, with CEO He Xiaopeng humorously attributing the mishap to the learning process of 'walking.' Additionally, a Unitree robot kicked an engineer during a test, and previous events saw humanoid robots stumbling during a half-marathon in Beijing, highlighting the challenges still faced in the robotics realm.
