China launches an emergency lifeboat to bring three astronauts back to Earth

In a remarkable display of urgency, China successfully launched an uncrewed spacecraft late Monday, designed to serve as an emergency lifeboat for three astronauts stranded in orbit. The Long March 2F rocket lifted off at 11:11 PM EST (04:11 UTC Tuesday), carrying the Shenzhou 22 spacecraft, which was outfitted with cargo but no crew. Just over three hours after its launch, the spacecraft docked with the Tiangong space station, located approximately 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Earth. The rapid response was necessitated by a critical issue discovered on November 5, when officials found that one of the two crew transport ships attached to the Tiangong station had sustained a cracked window, likely due to a collision with a tiny piece of space debris. The damage was identified during a routine crew handover, shortly after a new three-member team arrived at the station and just before the scheduled return of three astronauts who had been in orbit since April. Following assessments by engineers, the Shenzhou 20 was deemed unsafe for re-entry. Consequently, the outgoing crew was returned home aboard the Shenzhou 21, which landed successfully on November 14. However, this left the remaining astronauts aboard the Tiangong without a reliable means of getting back. Amidst this critical situation, technicians at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert worked tirelessly to prepare a backup spacecraft for immediate launch. The China Manned Space Agency commended the mission command for their swift activation of contingency protocols, stating, “The entire project team responded calmly and scientifically, with participating research and testing units collaborating effectively to tackle the challenges at hand.”
