Chinese supercomputer powered by homegrown chips tops US models in global ranking

In a significant development in the global technology arena, China has claimed the title of the world's most powerful supercomputer, marking its first lead over the United States since 2017. The new supercomputer, named LineShine, is stationed at the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen and has outperformed the American supercomputer, El Capitan, in the latest biannual TOP500 ranking, which identifies the most powerful computing systems worldwide. The LineShine machine has achieved a computing speed that is 20% faster than El Capitan, which is housed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. Supercomputers like LineShine are essential for executing complex computations at remarkable speeds, frequently utilized in areas such as drug discovery, weather forecasting, AI training, and various simulations. This achievement comes amid escalating tensions and competition between the U.S. and China in the tech domain. Washington has been implementing measures to restrict China's access to advanced technologies, particularly in AI and semiconductors, which could bolster its military capabilities. These restrictions began during President Trump's administration and have continued to shape the landscape of tech innovation. According to the National Supercomputing Center, the success of LineShine is attributed to significant breakthroughs in overcoming technological barriers. The center stated that the machine represents a historic advancement for China’s supercomputing sector, emphasizing the development of a self-reliant hardware and software ecosystem. Notably, LineShine utilizes conventional CPUs, commonly found in consumer electronics, rather than the specialized GPUs that dominate most current supercomputers, which are largely produced by American companies like Nvidia. Since 2022, the U.S. has curtailed China's access to these cutting-edge GPUs, prompting domestic companies to pivot and innovate in response to these limitations. For instance, the AI startup DeepSeek emerged last year, delivering competitive performance with fewer advanced chips, catching the attention of the technology sector in Silicon Valley. At a recent award ceremony in Hamburg, Germany, LineShine's chief designer, Lu Yutong, highlighted that the machine diverged from the traditional hybrid architecture, which combines CPUs and GPUs. Instead, it employs a fully developed, domestic computing infrastructure tailored for scientific, engineering, and AI workloads. Since its deployment, LineShine has been engaged in various applications, including climate modeling, engineering simulations, drug discovery, and neuroscience. However, experts advise caution in interpreting the TOP500 rankings as a definitive measure of a country's capabilities in AI. Andrew Rohl, director at the National Computational Infrastructure in Australia, remarked that while LineShine's achievement is impressive, it does not provide a clear picture of who leads in AI capabilities or infrastructure. The TOP500 ranking is based on an older benchmark primarily assessing traditional scientific computing tasks rather than the complexities of modern AI. Many powerful AI systems developed by U.S. companies like xAI and Google, as well as supercomputers used by defense facilities, are not included in this ranking for various reasons, including sensitivity and economic considerations. Following El Capitan, the second-ranked supercomputer, are additional American systems located in Tennessee and Illinois, along with a German counterpart. Countries such as Italy, Switzerland, and Japan also maintain a notable presence within the top ten supercomputers worldwide.
