This Chinese company could become the country’s first to land a reusable rocket

In a significant development in China's aerospace sector, LandSpace, a prominent rocket startup, is preparing for the inaugural flight of its Zhuque-3 rocket. This launch, which could occur as early as tonight, positions the company to potentially become the first in China to land a reusable rocket. The countdown is on, with liftoff anticipated around 11 PM EST (04:00 UTC Wednesday), or noon local time at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China. LandSpace has been making strides in the competitive landscape of Chinese space exploration, and the Zhuque-3 rocket is set to be the largest commercial launch vehicle ever developed in the country. The launch window is expected to last around two hours, as indicated by airspace warnings that advise pilots to avoid the rocket's flight path. A key feature of this mission is LandSpace's attempt to land the first stage booster, utilizing a landing approach similar to that of SpaceX and Blue Origin in the United States. A newly constructed landing pad in the remote Gobi Desert, situated approximately 240 miles (390 kilometers) southeast of the launch site, is ready for the booster’s return. Unlike many US spaceports, Jiuquan is located inland, requiring rockets to ascend over land as they exit the atmosphere. Once the Zhuque-3 booster completes its ascent, it will execute a controlled descent towards the designated recovery area, firing its engines to slow down for landing roughly eight-and-a-half minutes post-launch. However, LandSpace has not publicly disclosed the likelihood of achieving a successful landing or launch, leaving many in suspense. It’s worth noting that LandSpace, founded in 2015 following significant reforms in China's space policy, has succeeded in raising over $400 million from venture capitalists and state-backed investment funds. The venture represents a pivotal moment for China’s burgeoning private space industry, as it seeks to establish itself in the global space race.
