Morgan Stanley doubles China humanoid robot shipment forecast as commercialization accelerates

Morgan Stanley has significantly revised its outlook for the humanoid robotics sector in China, indicating that the transition from demonstration projects to commercial applications is happening more rapidly than anticipated. On Tuesday, the investment bank announced an increase in its forecast for humanoid robot shipments in China for the second time this year, now expecting approximately 50,000 units to be shipped in 2023, nearly double its earlier estimate of 28,000. This follows an earlier revision from an initial prediction of just 14,000 units made in January. The bank projects that the market for humanoid robots in China will reach $2 billion this year and is expected to grow to $15 billion by 2030. Annual shipments could soar to 446,000 units by the end of the decade. Notably, this forecast covers only external sales, excluding those aimed at prototypes, trial runs, or internal corporate use. Sheng Zhong, an equity analyst at Morgan Stanley, highlighted the factors contributing to this rapid adoption, stating, "Commercial verification, policy support, and supply-chain feedback point to faster humanoid adoption in China." The country is making strides to lead the industry, with numerous domestic manufacturers accelerating production and implementation of robots in various sectors, including factories, convenience stores, and restaurants. The Chinese government has prioritized the development of ‘embodied AI’—artificial intelligence integrated into physical systems like robots—over the next five years. Local authorities have been instructed to provide support to startups through subsidies, land access, and favorable loan conditions from banks. Last year, global shipments of humanoid robots reached around 13,000, with Chinese companies occupying the top five positions in the market. In comparison, American competitor Figure AI ranked seventh, while Tesla placed ninth. Elon Musk mentioned that Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot is not expected to be available for public sale until late 2027. Experts, like Joe Ngai, a senior partner at McKinsey Greater China, suggest that the humanoid robotics sector could represent a significant investment opportunity in light of China's rapid technological advancements. Ngai observed, "In any Chinese factory today, the level of automation and robotics deployed is unparalleled across the globe." Morgan Stanley's research also indicates a trend towards faster commercialization, particularly in factory and logistics environments, as well as in unmanned retail and interactive commercial services. The bank has identified Shanghai-listed Leaderdrive as a key player benefiting from this trend, raising its 12-month target price for the company from 269 yuan to 464 yuan ($68). Leaderdrive supplies precision robotic components to local humanoid manufacturers such as Ubtech and Galbot, and is projected to capture a 40% share of the global market this year. Furthermore, Chinese robotics firms are increasingly seeking opportunities for international expansion. Seer Intelligent, a Shanghai-based company that went public in Hong Kong recently, has been extending its reach beyond China since 2021. According to COO Jonathan Fan, overseas sales from more than 65 countries accounted for 18% of its total revenue last year. However, geopolitical uncertainties and ongoing trade tensions pose significant challenges, prompting the company to focus on diversifying its geographical footprint and ensuring compliance with local regulations. Concerns in Washington regarding China's advancements in artificial intelligence have intensified, with fears of growing reliance on Chinese technology. Suzanne Nossel, a senior fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, cautioned that if the U.S. views the competition solely as a race for new capabilities, it might lead in innovation but lag in shaping the global narrative on AI utilization.
