China’s EV price war turns into AI arms race beyond cheaper cars

In a bid to navigate a fierce pricing battle, electric vehicle manufacturers in China are increasingly integrating advanced artificial intelligence capabilities into their cars. The focus has shifted from merely enhancing battery life to implementing sophisticated driver-assistance systems and utilizing high-performance automotive chips. Today, the spotlight is on an array of in-car AI features that enhance the driving experience. ByteDance's Doubao AI model has emerged as a frontrunner, with over 50 car brands incorporating it into their offerings. During the recent Beijing auto show, Volcano Engine, the tech giant's cloud platform, revealed that Doubao is now featured in 145 car models, cumulatively impacting more than 7 million vehicles. This includes both local brands and foreign models like the all-electric Mercedes-Benz GLC, the Audi E7X from SAIC, and the Volkswagen ID. ERA 9X. Fermín Soneira, CEO of the Audi and SAIC Cooperation Project, highlighted the swift integration of new tech features, emphasizing the convenience of over-the-air updates. However, he noted that the automotive market continues to face significant sales pressures, stating, "The capacity is there, and the price war will persist in the coming months." This push towards AI is largely driven by consumer preferences for connected functionalities, such as interfaces compatible with Huawei smartphones and voice-activated assistants like Doubao. According to consultancy Chozan, Doubao stands out as the leading AI chatbot in China, boasting over 155 million weekly active users as of early 2023. The competition has transformed from a pricing war into a battle over technology features, particularly in cockpit innovations. Stephen Dyer, managing director at AlixPartners, pointed out the challenge of differentiation in an environment where technology can rapidly become homogenized. He noted that among the top 20 electric car models in China, those priced over 100,000 yuan ($14,645) often offer similar driver-assist and entertainment functions. Dyer predicts that Chinese automakers will need to innovate continually to maintain a competitive edge, as advanced technologies proliferate swiftly. He foresees a shift towards enhancing the overall customer experience—akin to luxury brands—where companies like Nio provide exclusive products and community spaces alongside high-quality vehicles. Although Nio faces challenges in cost management and slower market growth, it recently announced that its ES8 model achieved a milestone by selling 100,000 units in just 215 days. Additionally, Alibaba is set to integrate its Qwen AI model into vehicles manufactured by BYD and a Volkswagen joint venture. This system will enable drivers to perform tasks such as ordering food, booking hotels, and tracking packages using voice commands, even under limited network conditions. Tu Le, founder of Sino Auto Insights, emphasized that AI should enhance the user experience seamlessly, rather than being a standalone feature. He noted that while it may be difficult for Chinese automakers to distinguish themselves domestically, they might find opportunities to compete more effectively against foreign brands as consumer expectations evolve rapidly in the global market.
