A key factor in semiconductor manufacturing is the term 'yield,' which refers to the number of usable chips produced in a batch. The efficiency of China's DUV machines remains uncertain, as it is unclear if they will achieve yield levels comparable to ASML's products. Nick Patience, AI lead at Futurum Group, emphasized that any local Chinese production must reach yield parity to be viable. Current reports indicate that even SMIC, China's largest chip manufacturer, is using imported DUV machines that fall short of performance benchmarks set by TSMC in Taiwan. The challenges extend beyond just performance; scaling production is another significant hurdle. Reports indicate that the Chinese firm aims to produce five DUV units this year and ramp up to 20 by 2027, a far cry from ASML's planned production of around 130 machines in 2026, with a 30% increase expected in 2027. Analysts from SemiAnalysis pointed out that the complexities of producing reliable machines, coupled with the need for a robust support ecosystem, pose considerable obstacles for China's ambitions. ASML's recent share price drop reflects worries about potential erosion of its market share in China, where the company accounted for 14% of its net system sales last quarter—approximately €924 million (around $1 billion). However, experts remain skeptical about the immediate impact on ASML, given existing export restrictions that limit its ability to supply certain DUV tools to Chinese firms. Furthermore, while there have been reports of China developing a working EUV machine prototype, analysts caution that advancements in DUV technology do not guarantee success in EUV. Achieving a commercially viable EUV system required ASML nearly two decades and around $10 billion in investments, alongside significant collaboration with major tech companies. The path to developing a fully operational EUV system remains fraught with technological challenges.
