China unveils plan to accelerate integration of AI with energy sector

In a bold move to enhance the energy sector, China has introduced a comprehensive strategy aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations. Announced during the World Smart Industry Expo in Chongqing, the plan seeks to drive advancements in essential areas, including data management, computational capabilities, and algorithm development. The unveiling of this initiative comes at a time when the number of AI companies in China has skyrocketed from 1,400 to 5,000 over the past five years. Xin Guobin, the vice minister of industry and information technology, shared this significant growth at the event, highlighting the rapid evolution of the AI landscape in the country, which has paralleled its progress in electric vehicles. The strategy outlines specific measures to enhance data-sharing frameworks, create a collaborative model for integrating computing power with electricity, and deepen the synergy between AI technologies and software within the energy sector. Jointly crafted by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration, the plan sets ambitious goals for 2027, aiming to establish a robust innovation system for AI-energy integration and achieve substantial advancements in AI-driven technologies. As part of its ongoing efforts, China has already established over 40,000 smart factories and created 11 national pilot zones dedicated to AI innovation. Furthermore, 17 national demonstration zones have been set up for testing intelligent connected vehicles. The government has also initiated a 60 billion yuan national investment fund focused on AI, which aims to establish ethical guidelines for AI development and foster collaboration through the China-BRICS center for AI. Looking ahead to 2030, the plan envisions that China's AI applications in the energy sector will reach a leading global standard, supported by an improved framework for coordinating computing power and energy supply. This robust initiative underscores China's commitment to leveraging AI for transformative advancements in energy management.
