In a noteworthy development for its space program, China has successfully launched a reusable rocket for the second time this month, marking a significant achievement in its ongoing efforts in space exploration. The Long March 12A rocket, which shares similarities in size and design with SpaceX’s Falcon 9, lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center at 9:00 PM EST on Monday (02:00 UTC Tuesday). The rocket’s journey into low-Earth orbit proceeded smoothly for the upper stage, which achieved its mission's intended orbit. However, the first stage booster, powered by methane, experienced difficulties during its descent. It was supposed to execute a braking burn to slow its landing near the Gobi Desert but instead crashed in a remote area approximately 200 miles from the launch site. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) acknowledged the failure to recover the booster and stated that the reasons behind this mishap are currently under investigation. This incident mirrors the outcome of the initial flight of the Zhuque-3 rocket, developed by private startup LandSpace, which also had its first stage fail to land successfully despite reaching orbit. CASC emphasized that, despite the setback with the booster recovery, the mission provided invaluable engineering data regarding the rocket's performance under actual flight conditions. This information is expected to be crucial for future launches and attempts at successful booster recovery. The research team is committed to conducting a thorough review and analysis of the mission to refine the recovery strategy and enhance the verification of reusable technology in upcoming tests.
