In the global AI race, a sanctioned Chinese firm says cheaper models can still win

In the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, Chinese firms are racing to assert their dominance. Companies like DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, Alibaba, and Xiaomi have recently unveiled new models, vying for recognition in a competitive market. Amidst this frantic innovation, firms are under pressure to expand their user base and develop lucrative revenue streams, all while grappling with escalating research and development expenses as well as the costs associated with computing power and hardware. SenseTime, one of the pioneers in the Chinese AI sector, has made significant adjustments to remain relevant in the age of generative AI. Originally focused on facial and image recognition, the company is now venturing into multimodal systems that integrate text, audio, and visual data. Despite facing U.S. sanctions tied to allegations of surveillance in Xinjiang—a claim it has consistently denied—SenseTime remains resilient. Its latest offering, the SenseNova U1, enhances processing speed and efficiency by merging language and vision capabilities into one cohesive system. According to Lin Dahua, co-founder and chief scientist of SenseTime, the company is banking on cost efficiency as a strategic advantage. He cites DeepSeek’s model of delivering high-performing systems despite financial constraints as a guiding principle. While OpenAI's ChatGPT Images 2.0 creates stunning visuals, the SenseNova U1 is priced significantly lower, making it a practical choice for many applications. "In numerous scenarios, a top-tier model isn't necessary when a more economical option can handle most tasks effectively," Lin stated. The competitive landscape is not solely defined by U.S.-China dynamics; it includes domestic rivals as well. Initially, SenseTime viewed ByteDance's AI video model Seedance as a direct threat. However, the company has since adapted, incorporating elements from Seedance into its own short-video platform, Seko, thus enhancing its service offerings. As the industry evolves, the importance of sustainable business models is becoming increasingly apparent. Reports from The Wall Street Journal indicate that OpenAI missed its revenue and user targets, highlighting risks faced by both Chinese and American AI firms. Analysts from Jefferies note that pure-play AI companies are struggling with customer loyalty and differentiation amidst a crowded marketplace, while larger internet platforms benefit from robust cash flow and established customer bases. In China, major players like Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance leverage their broader business operations to subsidize AI development, placing standalone firms at a disadvantage—many of which are still unprofitable. To set itself apart, SenseTime is combining substantial AI models with applications and infrastructure to enhance service quality while reducing costs. Despite challenges, SenseTime has managed to narrow its net loss by over 58% last year and reported positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) for the first time since its IPO in 2021. Investors are keenly observing this positive trajectory. Lin emphasized that the company’s AI costs are under control, with a focus on improving model efficiency. Pricing strategies in the sector are varied; some companies like DeepSeek have aggressively reduced prices to attract users, while others like Zhipu are increasing theirs in an effort to monetize advanced models. Cloud services from Alibaba and Baidu have also seen price hikes due to soaring demand for AI computing resources. Moreover, ByteDance is eyeing a subscription model for premium features in its AI chatbot Doubao. Lin cautioned that while price wars may provide short-term promotions, long-term sustainability depends on delivering distinct value. Analysts suggest that some AI firms might be following a familiar strategy in the expansive Chinese market: invest heavily to capture market share before transitioning to a monetization phase. "They cannot continuously subsidize AI usage as it is costly," remarked UBP's Ling. "They need to illustrate a vision of substantial future demand or begin monetization sooner." In light of U.S. export restrictions, SenseTime is steering its international growth toward regions such as Southeast Asia, North Asia, and the Middle East, with recent expansions into Brazil. Despite geopolitical disruptions affecting operations, Lin affirmed that the company’s long-term goals in these markets remain steadfast. Ultimately, delivering practical solutions at competitive prices is crucial, as repeat purchases often hinge not on advanced technology but on quality service.
