In a significant regulatory move, China has announced a ban on retractable car door handles, set to take effect next year. This decision follows growing concerns regarding the safety implications associated with these design features, particularly in the wake of several accidents involving electric vehicles. Flush door handles have gained popularity in recent years due to their sleek design and aerodynamic benefits, which help improve the vehicle's efficiency. Automakers, including Tesla, have adopted these designs to enhance the aesthetic appeal of their cars. However, safety issues have emerged, with incidents where first responders were unable to access vehicles after crashes due to the lack of conventional handles. The Chinese authorities have been evaluating the safety of retractable door handles since mid-2024 and have concluded they pose unacceptable risks. As part of the new regulations, any new car models introduced after January 1, 2027, must feature a recessed space of at least 2.4 inches wide, 0.8 inches tall, and 1 inch deep. This change aims to ensure that door handles can be easily operated in emergency situations, thereby enhancing overall vehicle safety for passengers and first responders alike.
