China blocks sale of Nvidia AI chips

China's internet regulatory body has imposed a ban on its leading technology firms from procuring Nvidia's artificial intelligence chips. This action signifies Beijing's intensified commitment to fortifying its domestic tech sector in a bid to rival the United States. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) instructed major companies, including ByteDance and Alibaba, to cease their testing and orders of the RTX Pro 6000D, a specialized chip designed for the Chinese market. This directive was communicated this week to several firms that had previously indicated plans to order tens of thousands of these chips and had initiated testing procedures with Nvidia's server partners. Following the CAC's announcement, these companies promptly instructed their suppliers to halt ongoing projects related to the chip. The scope of this ban extends beyond earlier regulations that primarily targeted the H20, another Nvidia chip designed exclusively for China and commonly used in AI applications. This decision follows assessments by Chinese regulators that local chip manufacturers have achieved performance levels comparable to Nvidia's offerings. Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, shared his insights during a press briefing in London, mentioning that he anticipated discussions regarding the company's operational prospects in China with President Donald Trump during the latter's state visit to the UK. Huang expressed his disappointment over the situation, acknowledging the complex dynamics at play between China and the US. "We can only be in service of a market if the country wants us to be," he stated, underscoring the patience Nvidia has regarding its business dealings in China. This move reflects Beijing's drive to encourage local technology firms to enhance their semiconductor capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign entities like Nvidia as the competition in the AI sector intensifies.
