The Chevrolet Bolt is back… but for how long?

The Chevrolet Bolt is making its return to dealerships, offering an alternative for those who found the new Chevrolet Equinox EV too pricey or too large. With a starting price just below $35,000, the Equinox has established itself as a competitive option in the compact crossover segment. However, the Bolt, which was General Motors' first major foray into electric vehicles, is back and ready to appeal to a different audience. Originally launched following the unique EV1 and the Spark EV, the Bolt gained a loyal following due to its impressive range of over 200 miles at a reasonable cost. It not only provided an affordable mass-produced electric vehicle option prior to the Tesla Model 3's dominance but also became well-regarded for its driving experience. Despite its positive reception, the Bolt faced significant hurdles. General Motors struggled financially with each sale, particularly after a massive recall aimed at addressing battery fire risks due to faulty components. This recall resulted in a staggering cost of $1.8 billion, and the Bolt's production was ultimately deemed unsustainable as GM shifted focus toward its more profitable Ultium battery platform for newer models. In April 2023, GM announced plans to phase out the Bolt to make way for a lineup of new electric vehicles. This decision met with a strong backlash from fans, leading to a significant reversal. In July 2025, GM CEO Mary Barra confirmed that the Bolt would return, albeit with a new Ultium-based battery pack and exclusively in the Bolt EUV style, leaving hatchback enthusiasts disappointed. While the future of the Bolt remains uncertain, its comeback signals GM's acknowledgment of the demand for affordable electric vehicles in an evolving market.
