Chef Robotics escaped the robot cooking graveyard and says it’s thriving — here’s why

In an industry often likened to a graveyard of failed startups, Chef Robotics is defying the odds, according to CEO Rajat Bhageria. He points out that many ambitious projects in the automated cooking space, like Chowbotics and Zume, have met unfortunate fates, with some being acquired only to shut down shortly after. However, Bhageria believes Chef Robotics has discovered a successful strategy. The company aims to leverage AI-driven robotic arms to streamline large-scale food production—a task traditionally reliant on human dexterity and decision-making. Initially targeting the fast-casual dining sector, Chef Robotics swiftly adjusted its focus to food manufacturing, now partnering with significant enterprises such as Amy’s Kitchen and Chef Bombay, along with one of the country’s largest school lunch providers. Recently, Chef Robotics announced an impressive milestone: it has successfully delivered over 100 million servings. A company spokesperson clarified that a “serving” refers to a portion of food placed into a meal tray by their robots, representing a single component of a complete meal. By shifting away from conventional restaurant venues and targeting larger institutional clients, Chef Robotics is experiencing unprecedented growth. Looking ahead, Bhageria shared that the company plans to venture into what they describe as “smaller kitchens.” This includes partnerships with notable clients, such as one of the largest airline catering services globally. The company is also exploring opportunities in ghost kitchens—operations that prepare meals solely for delivery services like DoorDash. Future expansion plans include entering fast-casual restaurants, stadiums, and even correctional facilities. Furthermore, Bhageria emphasized that the data gathered from their extensive serving milestones is being utilized to enhance their AI models for food handling and packaging. Given the unpredictable nature of food, which can be challenging for robots to manage, Chef Robotics is committed to refining their technology, ensuring that their robots continually improve their efficiency and accuracy over time.
