Who is Chaya Nayak, the Indian origin AI leader leaving Meta for OpenAI?

Chaya Nayak, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence at Meta, has announced her decision to leave the company after nearly ten years, opting to join OpenAI. This move highlights the increasing competition for top talent in the AI sector, as more executives make significant career shifts. In a heartfelt post on LinkedIn, Nayak reflected on her decade-long journey with Meta, recalling her initial days at Facebook. She joined to launch the Data for Good initiative, aimed at utilizing data and AI for global benefit. "What began as an ambitious experiment became the cornerstone of my professional life," she shared. During her tenure at Meta, Nayak was instrumental in leveraging data and machine learning to tackle urgent global issues. She played a crucial role in the Data for Good program, which focused on harnessing AI for social good, and later led the Facebook Open Research and Transparency (FORT) team. This group worked on creating privacy-conscious tools that allowed researchers to analyze the platform's influence responsibly. Her initiatives included Disaster Maps, designed to assist communities in crisis, and extensive research into the platform's impact on democracy, especially during the 2020 U.S. elections. "Meta provided me with the opportunity to develop products that made a difference in crisis situations," she remarked, emphasizing the societal importance of her efforts. More recently, Nayak transitioned her focus toward generative AI, becoming a pivotal figure in the advancement of multiple generations of Llama and Meta AI models. She noted, "In the past two and a half years, I delved into GenAI, creating three generations of Llama and Meta AI, tackling complex challenges rapidly while envisioning the future of AI’s role in society." As she prepares to join OpenAI, Nayak will collaborate with Irina Kofman on Special Initiatives. She expressed enthusiasm about this new chapter, stating, "It feels like the ideal next step: to channel my experiences into projects that will shape the future of technology and society." She concluded her message with a sense of hope, declaring, "The journey isn’t over. I’m just turning the page." Nayak's departure is part of a broader trend of exits from Meta’s AI division. Reports indicate that several key members, including Rishabh Agarwal, Avi Verma, and Ethan Knight from Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, have recently left the company. Verma and Knight have also joined OpenAI, while Agarwal described his departure from a lucrative position as a difficult choice, driven by the desire to pursue new risks. Nayak's exit highlights the ongoing struggle for AI expertise, with OpenAI successfully attracting senior talent from competing firms. Replacing leaders of her caliber will undoubtedly pose a significant challenge for Meta.
