Users say they are seeing ads on ChatGPT. OpenAI says it's not true.

Amidst a surge of concern from its 800 million weekly users, ChatGPT is at the center of speculation regarding potential advertising on the platform. Recent social media posts showcased screenshots suggesting the presence of Target ads within the ChatGPT interface, igniting worries among users about the platform's future direction. In response to the uproar, Nick Turley, OpenAI's head of ChatGPT, took to X to clarify the situation. "There is a lot of confusion surrounding the rumors of ads in ChatGPT. I assure you, there are no ongoing tests for advertisements. Any screenshots circulating are either fabricated or misinterpretations," he stated. He emphasized OpenAI's commitment to maintaining user trust, asserting that any future advertising initiatives would be approached thoughtfully. The controversy peaked when a user shared a post describing their experience with what they perceived as ads while asking ChatGPT about Windows BitLocker, stating frustration over the perceived intrusion. However, it is important to note that the link in the screenshot likely pertains to a new shopping feature rather than a direct advertisement. In late September, OpenAI introduced the Instant Checkout feature in collaboration with Stripe, aiming to enhance the shopping experience within ChatGPT. This feature allows users to receive relevant product suggestions during shopping inquiries, with an option to purchase directly if supported. While OpenAI has indicated that it is exploring potential advertising on the platform, the timing remains uncertain. Developer Tibor Blaho previously discovered code in the ChatGPT Android app hinting at an advertising feature, although interpretations of this code may vary. Further complicating matters, OpenAI has recently refocused its efforts on ChatGPT following the impressive reception of Google's Gemini 3, leading to a pause on the rollout of new features, including any advertising plans. In an internal memo, CEO Sam Altman stressed the need to prioritize resources for ChatGPT, signaling a strategic shift in response to the competitive landscape. As of now, both OpenAI and its representatives have not provided additional comments on the situation, keeping users eager for clarity on the platform's future.
