ChatGPT’s new branching feature is a good reminder that AI chatbots aren’t people

On Thursday, OpenAI introduced an exciting new feature for ChatGPT that allows users to branch conversations into multiple parallel threads. This update serves as a poignant reminder that AI chatbots are not fixed entities but adaptable tools that users can manipulate to explore various conversational paths. The branching feature is now available to all logged-in web users, marking a significant response to years of demand from the ChatGPT community. By simply hovering over any message in a conversation, users can click on 'More actions' and select 'Branch in new chat.' This action generates a new conversation thread that retains all previous dialogue up to that point while keeping the original chat intact. This functionality is akin to creating a new version of a document for editing, ensuring that the original remains unchanged. For instance, a marketing team can now easily test different tones for ad copy—be it formal, humorous, or something entirely unique—by branching from the same initial setup. Previously, users were constrained by the linear nature of AI interactions, often forced to overwrite existing conversations or start anew to explore different ideas. The new branching capability simplifies this process, enabling users to delve into various what-if scenarios without losing context. A recent study from Tsinghua University and the Beijing Institute of Technology highlighted the limitations of linear dialogue interfaces for large language models (LLMs) in complex tasks like brainstorming or project analysis. The findings indicated that such interfaces increase cognitive load and diminish efficiency by requiring users to constantly compare and modify previous content. The response from the developer community has been positive, with many drawing parallels between this feature and Git, the version control system used by programmers. Both tools empower users to experiment with different approaches while safeguarding their original work, enhancing creativity and productivity in the process.
