OpenAI adds ‘Mini apps’ to ChatGPT: How to try Spotify, Canva, more inside chat

OpenAI has transformed ChatGPT into a versatile platform, allowing users to interact with popular applications directly within their conversations. Starting from October 6, 2025, users can engage with services like Spotify, Canva, Coursera, and others without leaving the ChatGPT interface. These innovative 'mini apps' function like interactive tools that respond to user commands in real-time. For example, you might say, "Spotify, create a Diwali party playlist," or "Canva, help me design a poster for my event," and receive immediate assistance in the chat window itself. This feature is available to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the EU, across various subscription plans including Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. There’s no need for additional downloads or switching between tabs. Simply initiate your request by mentioning the app’s name, such as, "Figma, design a mock-up for a login page," and ChatGPT will bring in the right application contextually. Upon your first use of any app, ChatGPT will prompt you to connect it, ensuring transparency about the data being shared. Once linked, the app operates as an intelligent assistant embedded within the chat interface. Furthermore, ChatGPT is proactive; it can suggest relevant apps based on the conversation. For instance, when discussing travel plans, it might offer Expedia's services to assist with trip arrangements. Similarly, if you're inquiring about real estate, Zillow could provide listings tailored to your preferences, complete with an interactive map. This exciting update signifies a shift in ChatGPT's capabilities, moving beyond simple Q&A to actively performing tasks. Additionally, OpenAI is inviting developers to join in on the action. The newly launched Apps SDK allows developers to create applications that can seamlessly converse within ChatGPT. Currently, developers can experiment using Developer Mode, with full app submissions and monetization options expected later this year. This SDK is founded on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard designed to facilitate universal and straightforward integrations.
