OpenAI is set to roll out an exciting update to its widely-used chatbot, ChatGPT, which will loosen current content restrictions for verified adult users. This change, as explained by OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, aims to recognize adult users by allowing them more freedom in content creation. In an announcement shared on platform X, Altman indicated that the upcoming update, expected in the next few weeks, will enable users to request responses from the bot in a more human-like manner. Furthermore, a significant easing of restrictions is planned for December, which will allow verified users to create erotic content through the chatbot. Previously, OpenAI implemented stricter controls on ChatGPT's responses to certain topics out of concern for user mental health. This decision followed serious incidents, including a lawsuit from the parents of a teenager who tragically took his own life, claiming that the chatbot provided harmful advice. Altman acknowledged the need for caution, stating, "We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to ensure we were being careful with mental health issues." However, Altman believes advancements in safety tools have now made it feasible to reduce these restrictions. He noted that new parental controls and content filtering options introduced in early October have equipped the company to manage the risks associated with relaxing guidelines. Altman expressed optimism about the potential benefits of these changes, saying, "We are going to be able to safely relax the restrictions in most cases." Interestingly, OpenAI is not the only organization exploring this territory. Elon Musk's xAI has already launched sexually explicit chatbots on its Grok platform, indicating a growing trend in the industry. As the rollout approaches, many are keen to see how these changes will impact user experience and content creation within ChatGPT.
