OpenAI has officially announced that its popular chatbot, ChatGPT, will no longer be accessible through WhatsApp, with the final operational date set for January 15, 2026. This decision comes in light of recent changes to Meta's policies regarding third-party chatbot services. The San Francisco-based AI company detailed this development in a newly updated FAQ section on its website. To retain your chat history, OpenAI advises users to link their accounts to WhatsApp before the deadline, as the platform does not support chat exports. "We recommend linking your account soon to maintain your history. Your WhatsApp conversations won’t transfer automatically after January 15, 2026," OpenAI stated. Users will have the option to unlink their phone numbers from their accounts after establishing the connection with ChatGPT. Until now, WhatsApp users have been able to interact with ChatGPT by messaging the chatbot at 1-800-242-8478, allowing them to ask questions, browse the web, generate images, and engage with the AI assistant. However, following a recent update to Meta's business API policy, general-purpose AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Luzia, and Poke will be required to cease operations on WhatsApp. Meta's updated policy explicitly prohibits access to the WhatsApp Business Solution for AI providers, which encompasses a wide range of AI and machine learning technologies. "Providers and developers of artificial intelligence or machine learning technologies... are strictly prohibited from accessing or using the WhatsApp Business Solution," the policy states. While Meta cites server load as the reason for tightening restrictions on third-party AI chatbots, it is worth noting that this change effectively positions Meta's own AI as the sole chatbot available on the platform. The integration of AI capabilities is increasingly prevalent across Meta's applications, leaving users with limited options to opt out of interactions with AI functionalities. Additionally, Meta has announced plans to personalize ads and content based on user interactions with its AI across platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
