ChatGPT is Apple’s most downloaded app of 2025 in the US

In a notable shift within the app landscape, OpenAI's ChatGPT has claimed the title of the most downloaded free iPhone app in the U.S. for 2025. Apple's annual app download report revealed this impressive ranking, with ChatGPT surpassing popular platforms such as Threads, Google, TikTok, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, and Google's Gemini. Last year, ChatGPT secured the fourth position, while Chinese shopping app Temu took the crown. Notably, in 2023, despite its May launch, ChatGPT did not make the top-ten list. The app's current dominance highlights the growing integration of AI into daily routines among U.S. consumers, suggesting a significant shift in how individuals seek information and interact with technology. This trend also poses a challenge to Google, which has traditionally maintained a strong grip on mobile search. As users increasingly turn to AI chatbots for quick answers, OpenAI's rise signals a potential disruption in the search market. Earlier this year, ChatGPT's popularity was evident as it became the most downloaded app worldwide in March, outpacing heavyweights like TikTok and Instagram. Additionally, Apple’s report included rankings for the top paid apps, as well as free and paid games for both iPhone and iPad. Notably, Block Blast! emerged as the top free game, while Minecraft was crowned as the leading paid game. On iPad, YouTube secured the top free app spot, whereas creativity app Procreate was the most downloaded paid app. Roblox took the title of the most popular free game on the iPad, showcasing a diverse array of user interests in the app ecosystem.
