Sam Altman says ChatGPT has hit 800M weekly active users

In a remarkable announcement, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman revealed that ChatGPT has achieved a staggering 800 million weekly active users. This milestone reflects a significant rise in usage across various sectors, including consumers, developers, enterprises, and government agencies. The growth trajectory of ChatGPT is impressive, especially considering that just in August, the platform was nearing 700 million weekly active users, up from 500 million at the end of March. Altman highlighted the scale of development around ChatGPT, stating, "Today, 4 million developers have built with OpenAI." He also noted that over 800 million users engage with ChatGPT weekly, processing more than 6 billion tokens per minute through their API. Altman shared these insights during OpenAI's Dev Day keynote, where he also unveiled new tools designed to enhance app development within ChatGPT. These innovations aim to create a new generation of interactive, adaptive, and personalized applications. "This will enable a new generation of apps that are interactive, adaptive, and personalized, that you can chat with," he stated. Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has seen explosive growth, quickly establishing itself as a leading consumer AI product and one of the fastest-growing online services in history. Recently, the tool has expanded its offerings with OpenAI Pulse, a feature that delivers tailored morning briefings to users. However, the platform has faced its share of controversies, including issues related to user trust, exemplified by a case where a user was misled by ChatGPT into believing he had made a groundbreaking mathematical discovery. Despite these challenges, OpenAI has solidified its position as the most valuable privately held company globally, following a recent stock sale that valued the company at $500 billion. The tech giant continues to innovate rapidly, having launched a new iteration of its video-generation tool, Sora, and a partnership with Stripe to advance agentic commerce solutions.
