OpenAI says ChatGPT is on track to reach 700M weekly users

ChatGPT is experiencing remarkable growth as a consumer application, with projections indicating it will reach an astonishing 700 million weekly active users this week, according to OpenAI. Nick Turley, the Vice President of OpenAI and head of the ChatGPT app, shared this milestone on social media, highlighting that the app had previously achieved 500 million weekly users by the end of March. The chatbot's user base has quadrupled over the past year, showcasing its increasing popularity. "Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and tackling more complex challenges. We have an exciting week ahead, and I want to express my gratitude to the team for enhancing ChatGPT's utility and fulfilling our mission to make AI beneficial for everyone," Turley stated in his post. The surge in popularity can largely be attributed to the launch of an upgraded image generation feature, which utilizes the advanced GPT-4 model, introduced in March. Following this, in early April, COO Brad Lightcap revealed that over 130 million users had produced more than 700 million images within just a few days of the feature's debut. In addition to user growth, ChatGPT has also seen a rise in subscribers. Lightcap recently reported that the number of paying business users has climbed to 5 million, up from 3 million in June. A recent analysis by market intelligence firm Sensor Tower further indicated that users engage with ChatGPT for over 12 days each month on average, ranking just behind Google and X. Users spend an average of 16 minutes daily on the app, as reported for the first half of 2025.
