ChatGPT has achieved a remarkable milestone, amassing $3 billion in consumer spending on mobile platforms worldwide as of this week, according to data from app analytics firm Appfigures. This impressive figure reflects the cumulative spending across both iOS and Android devices since the app was launched in May 2023, initially debuting exclusively on iOS. A significant portion of this expenditure occurred within the current year, with consumers estimated to have spent approximately $2.48 billion on the ChatGPT mobile app in 2025 alone. This marks a staggering 408% increase compared to the $487 million spent in 2024. In its inaugural year, 2023, the app generated $42.9 million, before skyrocketing by 1,036% to reach the 2024 total. The surge in consumer engagement is particularly notable when compared to other leading applications. ChatGPT took just 31 months to reach the $3 billion milestone in consumer spending, whereas TikTok took 58 months to achieve the same feat. Additionally, ChatGPT outpaced major streaming services such as Disney+ and HBO Max, which reached the $3 billion mark in 42 months and 46 months, respectively. In terms of competition, xAI’s Grok is following a similar revenue growth trajectory, having been launched in late 2023 for X Premium Plus subscribers before expanding to a broader audience. Grok has shown the potential to approach ChatGPT’s cumulative revenue at a comparable stage of monetization. While the $3 billion figure highlights significant consumer uptake, it is not the sole indicator of AI app adoption or long-term revenue potential. ChatGPT's mobile users are investing in paid subscriptions, such as the $20 per month ChatGPT Plus and the $200 per month ChatGPT Pro for advanced features. Moreover, AI applications can generate revenue through various channels, including developer services and, potentially in the future, advertising. Recently, ChatGPT also launched a new app store concept, hinting at monetization opportunities down the line. Meanwhile, Google is investigating ways to leverage its established search ad business within AI-powered contexts, such as AI Mode, AI Overviews, AI shopping, and an increasingly AI-driven Discover page. In contrast, Anthropic is targeting the business sector and is reportedly on course to achieve $70 billion in revenue by 2028.
