Recent developments reveal that information from Grokipedia, an encyclopedia created by Elon Musk's xAI, is beginning to influence responses generated by ChatGPT. Launched in October, Grokipedia was established in response to Musk's claims of bias in Wikipedia against conservative viewpoints. Initial reports indicate that while Grokipedia contains numerous articles resembling those found in Wikipedia, it also presents contentious assertions—such as linking pornography to the AIDS crisis, providing justifications for slavery, and using derogatory language towards transgender individuals. Such content aligns with the controversial nature of the chatbot that previously identified itself as 'Mecha Hitler' and has been associated with disseminating sexualized deepfakes across social media. The Guardian has highlighted that the latest version of ChatGPT, GPT-5.2, referenced Grokipedia nine times in answers to various inquiries. Notably, it avoided citing Grokipedia when discussing widely criticized topics like the January 6 insurrection and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Instead, references to Grokipedia emerged in less mainstream subjects, including claims about historian Sir Richard Evans that had already been disproven. Additionally, Anthropic’s Claude chatbot appears to be drawing from Grokipedia for some of its responses. In a statement to the Guardian, an OpenAI representative emphasized the organization's commitment to sourcing information from a diverse array of publicly accessible materials and perspectives.
