The introduction of Google’s advanced AI model, Gemini 3, has put OpenAI’s ChatGPT in a challenging position in the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence. Recent data from Similarweb indicates that ChatGPT has experienced a significant drop in web traffic, losing over 22% in the past six weeks. As the traffic dwindles, ChatGPT’s weekly visitor count has decreased from 203 million to 158 million since early January. In contrast, Google’s Gemini has maintained a stable performance, attracting approximately 55 to 60 million daily visits. Notably, Gemini’s traffic has surged by 40%, effectively growing in size relative to ChatGPT’s audience. Engagement metrics reveal that Gemini users are spending more time on the platform, with an average visit duration of 7 minutes and 20 seconds, compared to ChatGPT’s 6 minutes and 32 seconds. This trend highlights a pivotal shift in user preferences within the AI sector, suggesting that competition is intensifying. According to a report from the Economic Times, two factors may be contributing to ChatGPT’s traffic decline: a typical slowdown during the holiday season and the rising appeal of Gemini, which is quickly establishing itself as a leader among AI models. The data from Similarweb also shed light on the traffic of other AI platforms in December, showing Perplexity.ai with 154.9 million visits, Grok at 247 million, and the Chinese AI tool DeepSeek boasting 282 million visits. This dynamic shift illustrates how competitive pressures are reshaping the AI market landscape, diminishing the once-significant first-mover advantage.
